Experts of the Sufix automotive components brand named the key reasons for the premature failure of steering rails in the Russian car market. According to them, the key factor in the rapid occurrence of knocks, backlashes and leaks is the deliberate savings of manufacturers on body alloys, sleeve materials and precision machining. Experts told "Izvestia" about this on September 15.

According to experts, the service life of the steering rack of a number of budget brands is often limited to only 10-15 thousand kilometers, and the reason lies in the approach of factories to the selection of raw materials and components. The rack-and-pinion steering mechanism design includes a housing, support bushings, a shaft with a gear, a gear rack, a sealing system and protective dust covers. Choosing an economical option in at least one of these elements triggers a chain reaction of wear on the entire assembly.

"The support sleeve is the defining element on which the serviceability of the assembly depends. If the manufacturer uses cheap materials instead of specialized polymers, the sleeve breaks quickly. This leads to a body working out, a violation of the engagement in the "gear-rail" pair, an increase in gaps and destructive dynamic loads. The second classic problem with cheap rails is the use of low—grade non-ferrous metal alloys for the hull. The grooves in the sealing areas of the Teflon rings of the hydraulic distributor wear out over time. The liquid begins to flow inside the case, the pressure drops, and the amplifier stops working correctly," said Andrey Babushkin, technical Director of LYNXauto and Sufix brand expert.

Experts called weak machining tolerances an additional factor in reducing resource in the budget segment. The lack of strict dimensional accuracy requirements in hundredths of a millimeter causes geometric deviations, constant microsteps and accelerated abrasion of moving parts, they added.

Nikita Rodionov, technical director of Fit Service, an international franchise car service network, warned on July 29 that refilling gasoline after the first click of the filling gun is not recommended due to overload of the vapor capture system, the risk of expensive breakage and the creation of conditions for leaks and fire.
