- A special national holiday on September 15 is Mammoth Day: history, traditions, omens
Every year on September 15, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the martyr Mamant of Caesarea, who suffered for the Christian faith in the third century. In the national calendar, the date is known as Mammoth Day, or Mammoth Shepherd. In 2026, the holiday falls on a Tuesday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the "Izvestia" material.
What is the church holiday on September 15th?
The martyr Mamant lived in Caesarea of Cappadocia in the 3rd century. His parents, Theodotus and Rufina, were noble Christians from Paphlagonia who openly professed their faith.
For this, the couple was arrested and imprisoned. Theodotus endured imprisonment heavily and died in prison. Shortly after his death, pregnant Rufina gave birth to a son prematurely and also died, having managed to entrust the baby to God in prayer.
The orphaned child was taken in by a wealthy Christian, Ammiya. She buried his parents and raised Mamant as her own son. The boy started learning to read and write early. According to his life, he was distinguished by his abilities and already in his youth he openly talked with his peers about the Christian faith. Several young pagans converted to Christianity under his influence.
Mamant's sermons were reported to the local ruler Democritus. The young man was detained and brought to trial. Because of his noble origin, the ruler did not dare to torture the Christian himself and sent him to Emperor Aurelian.
At first, he tried to convince the young man to renounce Christianity with promises, and then, seeing resistance, he turned to threats and tortures. But Mamant did not renounce his faith even under torture. After that, he was thrown into the water, but the martyr was saved by an angel and ordered him to retire to a deserted area near Caesarea.
There Mamant settled in seclusion and built a small church. He spent his time in prayer and fasting. The life tells us that wild animals came to his dwelling, and the hermit himself fed on the milk of goats and fallow deer. He made cheese from the remaining milk and distributed it to the poor.
Around 275, Mamant was again found out in Caesarea and soldiers were sent after him. The saint did not try to hide. According to legend, when he met the squad, he invited the guards to his place, treated them to milk, and then he gave his name and voluntarily went with them.
Mamant was brought to the viceroy Alexander. After refusing to sacrifice to pagan gods, he was tortured. Then the martyr was taken to the wild animals, however, according to the hagiography, they did not touch him. Then one of the pagan priests inflicted a fatal wound on him with a trident.
The wounded Mamant managed to get out of the city. He reached a small cave, where he soon died. Christians found the body of the martyr and buried it.
Traditions of the national holiday Mammoth Day on September 15th
In Russia, the name of the martyr Mamant eventually transformed into more familiar colloquial forms — Mammoth and Mammoth. Thanks to the stories about the saint's life in the desert, where wild goats and sheep came to him, the peasants considered him the patron saint of sheep and goat breeding. Therefore, in the peasant calendar, the holiday is called Mammoth Day, Mammoth Shepherd or Goat clan.
On September 15, they tried not to let goats and sheep out to pasture early. The people said: "Don't drive the cattle out to Fedot and Rufina in the morning, if you drive them out, you'll bring trouble." This was done later, when it got warmer.
The main concern of this day was related to sheep and goats. Sheep sheds and stables were checked before frosts, manure was cleared, cracks were insulated with moss, and feeders were cleaned.
Special attention was paid to animal protection. The owners tried to feed the sheep and goats well, and give them fresh water. In some areas, an old shoe was hung in a stable — according to legend, such an amulet was supposed to protect cattle from the evil eye and evil influences. Candles were lit in the house, and the living and utility rooms were bypassed with heather or incense to clear the space and ward off evil spirits.
Milk products were always placed on the table on September 15. The housewives prepared cheese, cottage cheese, curdled milk and other dairy dishes — this custom was directly connected with the life of Mamant.
Unmarried girls were supposed to drink goat's milk at dawn. There was a belief that such a meal should bring a meeting with a betrothed closer. And the holiday itself in the national calendars was considered suitable for dating, declarations of love and matchmaking.
In a number of Russian regions, the harvesting of late potatoes was also started on Mammoth. The tubers were dug out and sorted, the best ones were put aside for food and winter storage, and the damaged ones were immediately cooked. In folk medicine, raw tubers were used for joint pain and rheumatism, grated potatoes were used for compresses on sore spots, and they were also carried with them, hoping to protect themselves from joint pain in this way.
What not to do on the Mammoth Day holiday
In Russia, a number of superstitions and prohibitions were associated with the Day of the Mammoth, the main of which concerned livestock. On September 15, the peasants tried to treat the sheep and goats with special care. They should not have been bullied, beaten, or poorly fed. The ancestors believed that violating this rule could cause trouble, illness, and livestock deaths on the farm.
