The European Union's refusal to supply Russian gas could trigger higher prices and increase Europe's dependence on alternative suppliers. This was announced on September 12 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

"There will be a huge problem with gas. And now it's here, in the form of outrageously high prices. The reason for this is blind hatred of Russia and another American adventure in Iran. We will be able to purchase gas from Russia in Slovakia for only another year. After that, Slovakia will also be subject to a decision by European authorities prohibiting the import of Russian gas into the EU. "This will create even more pressure on prices and increase our dependence on other sources," Fico said in a video message posted on the official Facebook page (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).

According to him, the government opposed the EU's decision to stop importing Russian gas and appealed it to the relevant European court. He believes that when making this decision, the European Commission violated key EU principles, in particular the rule that such measures should be taken with the consent of all 27 member states, and not by a simple majority.

The Prime Minister noted that the situation on the gas market is likely to continue to deteriorate. According to him, the authorities have been preparing in advance for such a development and have the necessary tools to prevent an increase in gas and electricity tariffs for the population in 2027.

According to information from the ICE exchange on September 10, exchange prices for gas in Europe rose to $988 per 1,000 cubic meters. October futures from Europe's largest TTF distribution center opened trading at $951.3 (-0.2%), and by 15:53 Moscow time, the figures increased to $987.8.
