The dog handler explained the perception of the taste of food in dogs

On September 11, Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, told how dogs perceive food and determine food tastes.

In an interview with Radio 1, the expert noted that dogs perceive the taste of food primarily through their sense of smell and only then through their taste buds. According to him, the taste spectrum of pets is poorer than human, but they are able to distinguish some shades better than humans.

Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds compared to more than 5,000 in humans, but their sense of smell is much more developed. An interesting feature is the special receptors that allow you to taste the water. The need for drinking may also vary depending on the animal's diet.

Dogs practically do not savor food: they usually chew a piece and swallow it quickly. In this case, the temperature and texture of the food are important. Warm food smells stronger and therefore seems more attractive, and many pets like crispy food. For example, a dog's interest in an apple may be related not so much to its taste as to its smell and crunch.

At the same time, the statement that dogs are ready to eat everything is incorrect. Animals are able to recognize tainted meat or contaminated water and refuse them. However, the pleasant smell or sweet taste of some dangerous substances can deceive a pet. The interest in garbage is also explained by the abundance of attractive smells.

Golubev noted that due to the peculiarities of taste perception, dogs do not need a constantly varied menu. The main thing is that the usual diet is safe, balanced and meets the needs of the animal.

Before that, on September 8, Golubev, in a conversation with RT, warned that acorns and chestnuts pose a danger to dogs. Acorns contain tannins that cause liver and kidney damage, and horse chestnuts contain esculin, which affects the nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, the specialist said.

At the end of August, Golubev advised washing the dog's paws after a walk in the rain, and rinsing it completely if it was heavily soiled. You can dry your pet with a hair dryer — with warm air from a distance of 20-30 cm, according to the Moscow City News agency.
