A new pandemic of coronavirus infection is possible if a new gene variant of the virus appears. This was announced on September 11 by the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova.

"If the coronavirus as such manifests itself in some other gene variant, then, in principle, anything is possible. This is one of the options for pandemic spread, which we have been talking about for 20 years. It is absolutely obvious that this can happen," Popova said in a conversation with RIA Novosti, commenting on the possibility of another pandemic infection.

She added that the flu virus also has pandemic potential. According to the head of the department, Rospotrebnadzor is constantly monitoring the epidemiological situation and is ready for various scenarios.

Popova reported on September 9 that an increase in the incidence of acute respiratory viral infections is expected in Russia by mid-September.
