The total number of brown bears in Russia in 2026 is 307.9 thousand individuals, most of the animals live in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. This was announced on September 9 by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation.

The most significant predator groups are concentrated in the regions of Siberia and the Far East. The Krasnoyarsk Territory, which is home to 26.6 thousand bears, has become the leader in numbers. 26.2 thousand individuals were recorded in the Khabarovsk Territory, 24.2 thousand in the Kamchatka Territory, and 22.4 thousand in the Irkutsk Region.

In Yakutia, the population is 18.8 thousand individuals, in the Amur region — 13.3 thousand, in the Tomsk region — 11.2 thousand. The lowest numbers in the Siberian Federal District were recorded in Buryatia and the Altai Republic, where 6.1 thousand and 4.7 thousand bears live, respectively.

According to the Ministry, the population of the brown bear in the country has increased by more than 2.3 times compared to 1990. At that time, about 130 thousand individuals lived in Russia.

"The number of brown bears in the regions is determined annually based on the results of state monitoring. Accounting takes place on the basis of scientifically sound methods that take into account the traces of predators, the state of the food supply, habitat properties, environmental and behavioral characteristics of the species," RIA Novosti quoted the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

On September 9, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Hall announced the introduction of a high-alert regime due to the increased frequency of bear sightings in the city. The regime applies to forces and services responsible for public safety, the report said. At the same time, the administration stressed that the situation remains under control.
