The expert revealed the main differences between the iPhone 18 and the previous model

The new iPhone 18, according to preliminary data, will receive a number of technical improvements compared to the iPhone 17, but the changes will not be as large-scale as during the transition between previous generations. The main differences will be a new processor, a possible increase in RAM, and an upgrade to the front camera. Alexey Tulpin, an expert on equipment certification and founder of the Russian Standard-Moscow project, told Izvestia about this on September 9.

According to the expert, the basic iPhone 18 will retain a 6.3-inch screen diagonal and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, which first appeared in the basic version of the iPhone 17. At the same time, Apple can improve the panel itself by increasing brightness and energy efficiency.

One of the main technical changes will be the new A20 processor. As Tulpin noted, unlike the A19, which is produced using a three-nanometer process technology, the new chip should switch to a two-nanometer technology. This will improve device performance and reduce power consumption.

An increase in RAM is also expected. According to preliminary data, instead of 8 GB in the iPhone 17, the new smartphone may receive 9 or 12 GB. According to the expert, additional memory is especially important for the development of Apple Intelligence functions that work directly on the device.

The iPhone 18 cameras, according to Tulpin, shouldn't get a drastic change. The main camera will probably retain the same concept, but the front-facing module may be a noticeable upgrade: instead of the 18-megapixel sensor in the iPhone 17, the smartphone may receive a 24-megapixel camera.

The expert noted that the modem may also change in the new generation. Apple plans to use its own C2 solution instead of the Qualcomm modem, which will allow the company to gradually reduce dependence on a third-party manufacturer and increase the efficiency of working with mobile networks.

At the same time, before entering the Russian market, the devices undergo mandatory checks, Tulpin noted that smartphones must comply with the requirements of the technical regulations of the Customs Union 020/2011 on electromagnetic compatibility and receive the EAC marking.

In addition, the IP68 protection against dust and moisture declared by the manufacturer is checked according to GOST 14254-2015, and the safety of the lithium battery is evaluated according to GOST R IEC 62133-2-2019. According to the expert, such checks are part of the mandatory safety assessment of the device and complement the technical characteristics of the smartphone.

The Axios portal reported on August 26 that a folding smartphone model will be presented for the first time at the presentation of Apple's new iPhone 18 line. The official presentation will take place at 10:00 Pacific Time (21:00 Moscow time).
