- The climber called the long-known threat of glacier collapse in the mountains of the CBD
Climber Dmitry Polyakov, who witnessed an avalanche in Kabardino-Balkaria, said on September 7 that the risk of glacier collapse was known in advance. According to him, they try not to go to this place in such large groups.
"They don't come close. As far as I know, there was a glacier hanging there, which everyone knew would collapse in the near future. There is also a similar glacier further down the gorge at the Bezengi wall. This is why the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case on negligence the day before," he said in an interview with RT.
The chances of finding the six missing tourists alive are low, Polyakov said.
An avalanche hit the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria on September 6. As a result of the incident, according to the latest data, 11 tourists were killed. On the same day, the Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case in this regard in accordance with Article 239 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Creation of a non-profit organization that encroaches on the personality and rights of citizens").
On September 7, Izvestia published footage of the collapse of snow masses, and also learned about the condition of the surviving victims from Zaurbek Lukyanov, Deputy Chief Physician for Surgery at the Republican Clinical Hospital. He said that three patients are serious but stable, and three more are "in the yellow zone" and are preparing to be discharged. One of the eyewitnesses of the tragedy, tourist Igor Yerylkin, shared on September 7 that the weather on the day of the avalanche on tourists was good and, at first glance, allowed them to go on mountain walks.
