On September 7, Svetlana Zhurova, First deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, suggested that American President Donald Trump decided to amuse the people with a statement about the ownership of the Moon by the United States, and everyone would treat it with a smile.

"At first, when I read this news, I thought, doesn't the Moon belong to the United States? This refers to Congressman Anna Paulina Luna. I swear, my first reading was exactly like that. I wonder if they've staked it out, do they think? The next stage will be: The Moon is a satellite of the Earth, so the Earth also belongs to the United States?"— said Zhurova in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

She added that Trump probably decided to amuse the people in this way.

Zhurova recalled that the Soviet Union was the first to reach the Moon in 1959 using the Luna-2 spacecraft. According to the parliamentarian, therefore, from a historical point of view, the statement about who first "touched" the Earth's satellite can be disputed.

The day before, Trump posted on his social network Truth Social an image with an American flag on the Moon. It was accompanied by the caption: "The moon is ours," the website writes kp.ru . The publication has garnered thousands of likes, clarifies 360.ru . Prior to that, the US president expressed the hope that a lunar object would one day be named in his honor. He previously stated that the Strait of Hormuz should be named after him, RT notes.

In April, the astronauts of the Artemis 2 mission returned to Earth after the first manned flyby of the Moon in more than 50 years. During the flight, the crew checked the operation of the Orion spacecraft and the SLS rocket, writes Life.ru .

In August 2025, the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennady Krasnikov, spoke about the race for the exploration of the Moon that had begun in the world, IA Regnum reminds. Russia plans to use nuclear energy to create a permanent infrastructure on the moon.
