A local ceasefire regime was introduced in the area of the Zaporizhia NPP

A local ceasefire has come into force in the area of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) to carry out repairs on the power transmission line. This was announced on September 5 by the press service of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The silence mode is necessary to restore the external power supply to the station, which was interrupted a long time ago. According to the agency, on August 20, due to military operations on the northern bank of the Dnieper River, the facility lost contact with the last active 330 kV Ferroalloy-1 power transmission line.

Since the shutdown, the nuclear power plant has provided cooling to six reactors and spent fuel storage pools using emergency diesel generators. The agency stressed that the fuel reserves at the station are coming to an end, which could lead to a complete de-energization of the facility in the coming days.

"As part of the temporary ceasefire around the damaged power transmission line, specialists will begin repairs today after clearing the territory," a message on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

The day before, Evgenia Yashina, Director of Communications at the NPP, said that a difficult situation remains at the facility due to the complete loss of external power supply and the need to use backup generators. She also stressed that a stable supply of electricity is necessary for the functioning of systems that ensure the safety of the facility.

On August 31, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev announced that the situation at the nuclear power plant had worsened again. He blamed the Kiev authorities for what is happening, who are not going to fix what is happening.
