The Netherlands transported about 86 tons of gold reserves to London
From March to August 2026, the Dutch Central Bank (DNB) transported to London about 86 tons of gold from reserves held in the United States and Canada (about 313 tons of precious metals). In a report to the regulator on September 2, this decision was explained by rising geopolitical tensions, as well as the need to increase the liquidity of gold reserves and prepare for possible crises.
The operation was carried out in two ways: about 59 tons of gold were sold in New York and a similar amount was purchased in London. More than 27 tons were physically removed from storage facilities in the USA and Canada.
DNB noted that gold deposited in New York and Ottawa may not be used as quickly and directly as assets managed by the Bank of England in times of serious crises. After the operation, the share of Dutch gold reserves stored in London reached a maximum of about 32.1% of the total reserves of 612.4 tons.
According to a report by the World Gold Council (WGC) on July 30, in the second quarter of this year, several world central banks (CB) sharply increased purchases of gold, the volume of which reached 289 tons and became a record for this period. Poland turned out to be the leader in increasing gold reserves (+51 tons), followed by China (+33 tons). The most active buyers were also Uzbekistan (+16 tons), Kazakhstan (+15 tons), as well as the Czech Republic and Jordan, which bought 6 tons each within the specified period.
