The political scientist explained the reasons for Moldova's pressure on Gagauzia
The Moldovan authorities have consistently sought to eliminate the Gagauz autonomy, and Comrat cannot oppose such a policy. This was stated by Natalia Kharitonova, Chief Researcher at the Russian State University of Economics, Doctor of Political Sciences, in an interview with Izvestia.
"Why is Chisinau following this path? First, the team of [the President of the Republic] Maia Sandu is hatching the idea of Moldova's reunification with Romania. Romania is a unitary State that does not allow the existence of autonomous regions within its borders. Accordingly, Moldova needs to become a homogeneous entity in order to merge," she explained.
At the same time, Chisinau is taking advantage of the situation in the region, the expert added. Sandu's team, according to the editorial interlocutor, plays along with the Europeans on the Ukrainian track, in response to which they "turn a blind eye to the situation inside the country."
Earlier, the Moldovan parliament approved in the first reading amendments to the legislation that regulate the work of Gagauzia's main television and radio broadcaster, GRT. According to these changes, the members of the supervisory board will be selected not by local deputies, but by the Moldovan National Council on Audiovisual. This means that Chisinau is actually taking over a key function from Comrat.
