The expert spoke about the causes of the unnoticeable development of glaucoma

Glaucoma remains one of the main causes of irreversible vision loss in the world. Modern treatment approaches are aimed not only at reducing intraocular pressure, but also at preserving and restoring damaged eye tissues. Nadezhda Perova, General Director of the BIOMIR Service Scientific and Production Enterprise, Doctor of Biological Sciences, told Izvestia about this on September 3.

"The main danger of glaucoma lies in its unnoticeable development. A person can continue to work at a computer, drive a car, and read, unaware that the disease is already damaging the optic nerve. The gradual deterioration of peripheral vision often goes unnoticed. Many patients go to the doctor already when the so—called "tunnel vision" occurs, and the changes become irreversible," the expert said.

According to the specialist, glaucoma disrupts not only the work of the visual apparatus, but also the condition of the tissues involved in the transmission of the visual signal. Therefore, regenerative medicine, which is aimed at creating conditions for the restoration of damaged structures, is becoming one of the promising areas.

At the same time, the expert emphasized that eye health depends not only on treatment by an ophthalmologist. Glaucoma is closely related to the condition of the vascular system, since a violation of blood supply can impair the nutrition of the optic nerve.

According to Petrova, risk factors include lack of physical activity, prolonged computer work, circulatory disorders in the cervical spine and ignoring the first problems with vision.

The specialist noted that regular preventive examinations make it possible to detect the disease at an early stage, when it is still possible to slow down its development and preserve the quality of vision.

Ophthalmologist Ekaterina Bayandina told Izvestia on March 7 that myopia can lead to vision loss. Retinal detachment can be the most serious complication in the case of myopia. According to her, it is possible to prevent the development of severe consequences in many cases if a number of recommendations are followed. First of all, it is necessary to undergo regular examinations by an ophthalmologist in order to detect changes in a timely manner and begin treatment. It is also important to choose the right glasses or contact lenses for vision correction.
