Kobyakov called the goal of Trump's "Greenland" plan to expand influence in the Arctic

The "Greenland" plan of US President Donald Trump was associated with an attempt to strengthen Washington's influence in the Arctic. This opinion was expressed on August 30 by Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of Russia.

Trump's "Greenland" plan, according to one version, is wrapped up by the EU (EU. — Ed.) and Denmark, on the other hand, which was a cover operation for the preparation of an attack on Iran, was actually designed to unite the rest of the Arctic under US control," Kobyakov said in a conversation with TASS.

According to him, it was about controlling the Northwest Passage off the coast of Canada and the European northern territories up to the Barents Sea area, where the Northern Sea Route (NSR) begins.

Kobyakov noted that such a configuration could allow the United States to create an alternative NSR route from the Pacific Ocean to the North Atlantic and compete with the Russian Arctic transport route.

According to the adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, this project is currently virtually suspended, which creates opportunities for Russia to gain competitive advantages in the development of the Northern Sea Route.

The Financial Times newspaper reported on August 10 that shipping companies are increasingly considering the Arctic and the NSR as alternative routes for cargo transportation. It was noted that this option allows you to shorten the delivery time, reduce costs and avoid some high-risk areas.

In turn, the head of the Ministry of Regional Development, Alexei Chekunkov, told Izvestia correspondent Anton Zolotnitsky on August 19 that South Korea and India were interested in navigating the NSR — there would be more regular lines on the route. Chekunkov added that the predictability, depth of analysis and safety of using the NSR are increasing.
