In 10 years, atmospheric emissions have decreased 8.5 times in Moscow.

Over the past 10 years, emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere of Moscow have decreased by 8.5 times per unit of gross regional product, and emissions from motor transport — by almost 70%. This was announced by the Mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, on Friday, August 28.

According to him, in 2025, the average annual concentrations of major pollutants did not exceed the established standards. The carbon monoxide content was 10 times lower than the maximum permissible level, and the concentration of PM10 particles was almost 30% lower than the safe value. The modernization of industry, the development of electric transport and the introduction of energy-efficient technologies contributed to the improvement of air quality.

Sobyanin noted that more than 3.1 thousand electric buses are already operating in Moscow, which make up over 40% of the bus fleet. In addition, the metro and MDC are developing, regular electric vessel routes and the number of electric vehicles is growing. Emissions from the capital's thermal power plants have decreased by 13.4% over the past five years.

The condition of urban reservoirs has also improved. In 10 years, the content of petroleum products in the central part of the Moskva River has almost halved. In the area of the Kuryanovsky sewage treatment plants, the concentration of ammonium decreased by 70% and phosphate by more than 60% compared to 2014. The water in the Yauza, Skhodnya, Setuni and other rivers has become cleaner, the Moscow City News Agency reports.

Green areas occupy about half of Moscow's area. In 2025, 12,000 large trees were planted in the city, and a systematic fight was launched against 32 species of alien plants that threaten the local flora.

Environmental monitoring is carried out using an environmental monitoring system. In particular, 57 automatic air quality control stations are operating around the clock in the capital. Sobyanin stressed that environmental well-being remains one of the priorities of the Moscow government.
