Russian doctors reconstructed the esophagus of a 12-year-old boy from the Central African Republic

A complex reconstructive operation was performed at the Central Clinical Hospital of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation for 12-year-old Granny Ngoli Pauline le Messi from the Central African Republic (CAR), who suffered a severe chemical burn of the esophagus after accidentally consuming acid. This was reported to Izvestia on August 20 by the hospital's press service.

The boy drank the clear liquid from the glass, mistaking it for water. As a result of a chemical burn, the esophagus completely lost its patency, which is why the child could not eat normally.

Earlier, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross in the Central African Republic installed a gastrostoma in the patient, an opening in the anterior abdominal wall through which food was supplied directly to the stomach using a special catheter. With this method of feeding, the child chewed the food and spat it into the tube, but this was not enough to fully replenish the nutrients. As a result, the boy's weight dropped to 17 kg, which is almost half the norm.

Russian doctors performed reconstructive surgery to restore the digestive tract. Since the damaged esophagus could not be repaired directly, surgeons used a section of the colon as a graft.

The specialists connected this area with the preserved part of the esophagus from above and the stomach from below, which allowed to restore the continuity of the digestive tract. After the intervention, the child was able to take solid food on his own. Now he is gradually gaining weight and recovering under the supervision of doctors. If the recommendations of the experts are followed, Granny Ngoli Pauline le Messi will be able to return to her usual lifestyle.
