A Russian Armed Forces soldier has successfully had a bone transplant from his leg to his arm at a military hospital in Ryazan.

A unique high-tech bone transplant from a leg to an arm was performed at the Ryazan branch of the military hospital of the Moscow Military District to repair damaged bone tissue. This was announced on August 28 by the Russian Defense Ministry.

Surgeons transplanted a fibula fragment from the leg into the radius of the arm using a modern technique. The specialists performed a complex intervention with precise fixation of the graft and restoration of its blood supply. The applied vascular connection technique promotes reliable engraftment of the transplanted bone tissue.

"The proven scheme is the most optimal when a well-coordinated team performs such a complex operation, in which there are several stages. <...> The six main stages that we did, firstly, were done very quickly, and secondly, quite successfully, with minimal blood loss. This approach is currently the most justified," said plastic surgeon Vyacheslav Ivanov.

The soldier suffered a serious injury to his arm, complicated by a fracture and a significant bone defect. Conventional treatment methods in this case did not allow the limb to be fully restored. The performed operation helped to preserve her functionality and provide an opportunity for further full-fledged rehabilitation.

Currently, the patient's condition is assessed as stable, and he continues to recover from surgery. After surgery, the serviceman undergoes comprehensive rehabilitation in a specialized hospital department, where he is provided with further medical support.

"We have been performing this operation for a long time. <...> We are constantly improving our skills," said Vladimir Skvortsov, head of the traumatology department of Branch No. 6 of FGKU 1586 VKG.

The rehabilitation program includes physiotherapy to improve blood circulation and tissue repair, physical therapy with a gradual increase in exercise, mechanotherapy on modern simulators to strengthen muscles and coordination, as well as classes with an occupational therapist to regain everyday and professional skills. Additionally, the patient receives psychological support, which helps to cope with stress and maintain motivation during the recovery period.

The hospital notes that the use of such technologies has become possible thanks to modern equipment, regular professional development and cooperation with leading trauma centers in Russia.

At the medical stabilization center, the soldiers are being treated before being sent to the hospital.

On August 8, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that military medics from one of the motorized rifle regiments of the 58th Guards Combined Arms Army of the Dnepr group of forces conducted an operation to extract explosive ordnance from the left upper limb of a wounded serviceman. The surgical procedure was performed in an advanced hospital.
