Canadian Prime Minister Carney announced the preservation of the name of Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario will retain its name, despite the decree of the American President Donald Trump. This was announced by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on August 27.

"This is Lake Ontario — then, now and always," Carney wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

Carney noted that the name of the reservoir has a centuries-old history and comes from the word Ontari'io in the Wendat language, which translates as "beautiful lake, big lake." According to the Canadian Prime Minister, this name existed long before the creation of the Canadian Confederation and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence of the United States, the lake itself is more than 400 years old.

The head of the White House, amid escalating trade disputes between Washington and Ottawa, posted a video on TikTok on August 27, showing a map on which he personally renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America. At the end of his demonstration, the American leader added that the geographical feature under the former name no longer exists, and urged the audience to get used to the new name.
