Russian tourists rescued in Nepal told the details about the flood

On August 27, Russian tourists rescued in Nepal told Izvestia how they managed to survive during a large-scale flood and mudflow.

According to Irina Ulgen, a participant in the trip, the roads were heavily washed out due to the prolonged downpours, which slowed down traffic. The disaster overtook the group in the gorge when the buses stopped behind the ledge of the mountain. This circumstance, according to the woman, saved the passengers, as the main impact of the flow fell on the slope.

The tourist noted that at the time of the incident she heard screams and saw a mass of black mud flying up through the window.

"I'm looking sleepily, and there's this firework flying. I had already started to put my phone away, and I saw the furious eyes of people who were running," Ulgen said.

After the water began to drain, the tourists left the transport, climbed the concrete stairs and went higher up the mountainside. There they met with a guide and waited out the rampant elements. Later, the band members were able to return to the buses to pick up their personal belongings.

The evacuation of the Russians was carried out by a military helicopter the next day, on August 27. Ekaterina Krasyukova, another member of the group, said that at the moment the women cannot return to their homeland. This is due to the fact that their documents were seized for registration at the border immediately before the incident.

"I remember when I was already climbing over rocks and grass. <...> It was very fast, on some kind of adrenaline," Krasyukova described the moment when their bus was overtaken by streams of water.

Severe flooding in Nepal occurred on August 26. The Ratopati newspaper clarified that 3,318 police officers were involved in the search and rescue operation. The country's tourism department has notified that 644 tourists, including eight Russian citizens, are missing.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova advised Russian citizens to refrain from traveling to flood-affected areas of Nepal. She also urged Russians who are already in Nepal to contact the Russian Embassy in Kathmandu for registration.
