The average term of car loans in Russia in July 2026 increased to 6.05 years from 5.15 years in July 2025, an increase of 17.4%. This was announced on August 27 by the National Bureau of Credit Histories (NBKI). Compared to June, the indicator also increased by 2% and updated the maximum since the beginning of 2024.

Among the leading regions in car loans, the longest periods were recorded in the Krasnodar Territory (6.68 years), Stavropol Territory (6.58 years), Tyumen Region with Khanty—Mansi Autonomous Okrug and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District (6.46 years), Orenburg Region (6.45 years) and Perm Territory (6.43 years). The minimum values were recorded in Moscow (5.43 years), the Moscow region (5.54 years) and St. Petersburg (5.58 years).

The most noticeable increase in the average loan term over the year was recorded in Chuvashia (+28.1%), Samara (+26.6%), Belgorod (+22.7%), Ulyanovsk (+21.9%) and Voronezh (+21.2%) regions. In Moscow and St. Petersburg, the indicator increased by 13.6% and 16.3%, respectively.

As noted in the NBKI, extending the terms of car loans allows banks to control the borrowers' debt burden (no higher than 50%) by reducing the monthly payment. The dynamics are also influenced by banks' limited appetite for risk, high interest rates, rising car prices and increased recycling fees. At the same time, credit institutions continue to place increased demands on the quality of borrowers' credit histories.

In total, 91.4 thousand loans for new and used cars were issued in Russia by the end of July 2026. This is 12.6% less than in June and 7% less than in July last year.

Earlier, on July 30, experts announced an increase in the availability of car loans in Russia. In the second quarter of 2026, the average loan rate for new cars in Russia decreased to 10.1%, and the amount of car loans decreased relative to the results of the first quarter.
