The media learned about the refusal of the Europeans to use the frozen assets of the Russian Federation for Kiev

The positions of the European Union (EU) member states regarding the possibility of using frozen Russian assets for financing Ukraine remain unchanged, and therefore Brussels considers it inappropriate to raise this issue again at the pan-European level. This was reported on August 26 by the Euronews portal, citing an informed European source.

"Looking back at last year, I don't see any desire to raise this issue again at the moment. The obstacles and reservations from some member states have not changed," a senior EU official told the newspaper, assessing the prospects for further discussions.

The interlocutor of the portal explained that, as before, one of the main legal and economic obstacles within the association remains the tough position of Belgium. The authorities of this country are still categorically not ready to independently bear the large-scale financial, reputational and judicial risks inevitably associated with the forced withdrawal or redistribution of blocked sovereign funds of the Russian Federation.

On August 8, the FAZ newspaper reported that the West had proposed transferring frozen assets to Russia from the Belgian Euroclear depository to a new specialized organization of the European Union in order to direct these funds to the needs of Kiev. It is noted that the relevant initiative was made by former German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, former French Minister for European Affairs Nathalie Loiseau and former Deputy National Security Adviser to the US President Dalip Singh.
