CD Projekt RED Studio has officially unveiled an updated version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt computer game. The announcement took place on August 25 during the opening ceremony of Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, a video broadcast of which was posted on The Game Awards YouTube channel.

The updated version is scheduled for release on September 29, 2026. The upgrade will be completely free for all owners of the original game on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

"My favorite part is the visual effects. These are new textures, updated rendering, advanced path tracing, foliage and much more. <...> And something else, of course, is fighting. They have become more modern, smooth and precise. We've updated the camera, aiming system, and added new animations. And what I especially like is the new finishing strokes. And one last thing: The Witcher 3 is a full—fledged role-playing game, right? Therefore, we have completely redesigned the ability system to provide players with more options," said Miles Tost, the lead level designer at CD Projekt Red Studio.

Along with the announcement of the remaster, the first trailer for the upcoming major plot addition called "Ballads of the Past" was presented. Its release is expected in 2027, but the exact date has not yet been determined. The add-on will work exclusively on the basis of the updated version of the game. This will be Geralt's last adventure before the baton is passed to the matured Ciri in The Witcher 4.

Tost promised to present other details at the annual international computer and video game exhibition Gamescom.

Researchers at the <url> educational platform learned on August 18 that schoolchildren's gaming interests change with age: elementary school students prefer creativity and virtual worlds, while teenagers prefer logic and strategies. Thus, in middle and high schools, world-building and exploration games (45%), puzzles (24%), and competitive formats (43%) are popular. Boys are more likely to choose competitions (54% vs. 34%), girls — puzzles (33% vs. 13%).
