The expert assessed the dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the enclaves
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is acting in the interests of Azerbaijan, Turkey and the West behind them. This was stated by former opposition MP Arman Abovyan in an interview with Izvestia.
"Baku and Ankara want to subjugate our country to their will, to create a kind of Western Azerbaijan in place of Armenia. Tigranashen is of key importance: if Baku takes control of this point, it will be able to cut Armenia in two. Why did this question arise now? The ruling party successfully survived the parliamentary elections in June, managed to retain power, and now they believe they have received a mandate for any decisions," he explains.
Earlier, Pashinyan stated that the village of Tigranashen, located on the road from Armenia to Iran, is not the territory of the country. According to him, Yerevan and Baku agreed to carry out delimitation on the basis of the Alma Ata Declaration of 1991, according to which the administrative borders of the former Soviet republics at the time of the collapse of the USSR are recognized as interstate.
"According to them, Artsvashen is the territory of Armenia, but Kyarki (Tigranashen), Barkhudarlu, Yukhary-Askipara are not. But there are other territories where the maps do not match reality — in Jermuk, other districts of Vayots Dzor, as well as in Tavush. The issue must be resolved, but without a military option," Pashinyan said.
On July 9, the Armenian Prime minister stated that the country's authorities could not abandon the discussion of the enclaves of the former Azerbaijani SSR, including the village of Artsvashen, which is a sovereign territory of Armenia, but is now controlled by Azerbaijan. To solve the problem, he offered two options: retaining the territory for the de jure owner or exchanging equivalent plots.
