Everything will be Celentano: what are the Moscow stages preparing for the audience this fall
Talking about how the new theater season will turn out in the capital is like guessing on coffee grounds. And not only because many theaters have not yet announced their plans. Art is "riding into the unknown," creative search is a risky business with unknown consequences, and even if the material, director, set designer, and actors have already been declassified, it is impossible to predict what the final result will be. But if at least one masterpiece appears, it will already redeem all attempts to surprise the audience. Especially for Izvestia, people on both sides of the ramp shared their forecasts.
More and more wonderful
According to the almost unanimous opinion of experts, the 2026/27 season may become one of the most intense in the recent history of the Moscow stage. Theaters will try their best to keep the viewer, who makes a point-by-point choice, giving preference to a specific director, author or venue. Along with the worn-out and reworked classics, serial stars and media personalities, new names, fresh faces and unknown names will be on the posters.

One of the trends in recent years is betting on young directors. For example, the artistic director of the Oleg Tabakov Theater, Vladimir Mashkov, put all three upcoming premieres in the hands of beginners — Vladislav Miller, 27, Sebastian Smyshnikov, 25, and Mikhail Shugarev, 23. Not only are they all actors by education, but two of them are also debutants in directing.

In a situation of fierce competition, theaters will try to get an audience by coming up with all sorts of moves and, most importantly, try to swing towards creativity, both visual and dramatic. If we talk specifically about our theater, then in December the play "The Groom" will be released — based on the ballad of the same name or, as it is also called, Pushkin's "folk tale", and it will be completely unlike anything currently going on in Moscow.
Young people are also actively performing at the Taganka Theater. This season, the very prolific Alexander Karpushin is releasing "The House of Bernarda Alba" based on the play by Lorca, which is worth watching for the participation of the People's Artist of Russia Lyubov Selyutina, and Shakespeare's "King Lear". And leading actress Daria Avratinskaya will direct two musicals — "West Side Story" and "June 31."
What the heavyweights are cooking
The Chekhov Moscow Art Theater continues to successfully balance between classics and modernity. And if large—scale projects are being implemented on the main stage, then laboratory sketches, readings and debuts are being implemented on the new and small stages. Among the upcoming premieres are net films: Kolya Krasotkin, based on Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, directed by Maxim Melamedov, and in October Konstantin Khabensky will offer two Chekhov vaudevilles, the play is called Love, Debts and Haymaking.

There is an unusual experiment at the Theater of Nations: the famous director from China, Mou Sen, and the chief director of the Krasnoyarsk Youth Theater, Murat Abulkatinov, will embody Sholokhov's "The Quiet Don" together. A blockbuster is expected.

Most likely, we are waiting for an abundance of performances based on the "Ordinary Miracle" by Evgeny Schwartz — 70 years since the first production. And the 200th anniversary of Leo Tolstoy is already looming on the horizon, respectively, it is worth waiting for "War and Peace", "Anna Karenina" and biopic. And then we'll explore literature from friendly countries, and we'll get to know authors from Africa, India, and China.
Mark Zakharov's Lenkom will present Vladimir Pankov's play based on the play "The Eldest Son, or Letters to His Son" on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Evgeny Leonov's birth. The peculiarity is that Alexander Vampilov's textbook text is supplemented with fragments of Leonov's memoirs, and the role of clarinetist Sarafanov, brilliantly played by Evgeny Pavlovich in 1976 in a TV movie, is entrusted to his son Andrey. Among the cast are new Lenkom stars: Igor Konyakhin, Stanislav Tikunov, Alexander Fokin.

The artistic director of the Mayakovka, Egor Peregudov, invites you to re-read Tolstoy's great novel about the breakup of a family in early September. His five-hour performance is called "Karenina. Volume two." The story will be told through four characters — Karenin, Vronsky, Dolly and Anna.

If the cinema is simply dominated by fairy tales, and their number is already making the eye twitch a little, then in the theater they go around in circles using the same names, while they are unable to offer a new, modern, unique reading. Millions of Karenins are lying under the train, Muscovites are still being spoiled by the housing issue, and the older brothers are spending the night and the night, having missed the train. Neither artistic directors, nor just directors, for the most part bother to find new interesting material, nor a way to implement it on stage. Which, of course, depresses the true theater-goer.
The first premiere of "Satyricon" is Nikolai Roshchin's play "The Day Before" based on Maxim Gorky's play "Egor Bulychov and Others", which once thundered, but is now rarely staged. For the Satyriconists, this is the first appeal to Gorky drama. Konstantin Raikin will play the rich merchant Bulychov. Timofey Tribuntsev plays several roles.

Pavel Parkhomenko's "Ordinary Miracle" will happen at the Gogol Theater in October, and Anton Yakovlev, the artistic director of the troupe, promises Chekhov's "Cherry Orchard" with Olesya Sudzilovskaya in the role of Ranevskaya by the New Year.

The Art Partner Theater Agency, perhaps the oldest and most famous of the private theater initiatives, will release "The Master and Margarita" directed by Peter Shereshevsky and featuring only four performers at the end of September. The Vakhtangov Theater also promises to transfer Bulgakov's novel to the stage, but Svetlana Zemlyakova's version will obviously be crowded — after all, this is a repertory theater and it is necessary to provide a large troupe with work.

Tickets for performances at chamber venues have become a new currency and sometimes sell out in a matter of hours. An interesting and extensive program was presented by the independent space "Inside", which will have three venues in the coming season. From the long list of premieres, pay attention to the little-known name "Two Rebekahs." Discovered two years ago, the mystical novel by Mikhail Kuzmin, a classic of the Silver Age, will be directed by Vladislav Mentorshev. It is based on the story of a love triangle. Another title doomed to box office success is Nabokov's Lolita by Philip Gurevich.
