- The EC announced the introduction of mandatory confirmation of the military status of Ukrainians
All Ukrainian refugees in Europe will be required to confirm that they do not evade military service in their homeland when receiving temporary asylum. This was announced on August 20 by the representative of the European Commission (EC) Markus Lammert.
"In fact, the Council's decision to extend the Temporary Protection Directive came into force earlier this month, on August 5, 2026. <...> At the same time, the Council's decision <...>..>there is no distinction between men and women when using it. As you remember, we are talking about military service or military service in the past, so there is no difference between men and women here," he said during a briefing broadcast on the website of the EC audiovisual service.
Lammert also clarified that the practical assessment of individual cases is entrusted to the competent national authorities of the Member States, and specific decisions will be entrusted to the competent national authorities of the countries. He stressed that these authorities also have the right to introduce additional checks and control measures to support this innovation.
The Ukrainian edition of Telegraf reported on August 15 that the European authorities began to refuse to grant temporary protection to adult citizens of Ukraine who did not provide up-to-date information from the official application of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine for military personnel.
On August 4, the EU lifted temporary protection for Ukrainian men liable for military service who arrived in the union starting on July 31 of this year. Thus, all Ukrainians who have arrived in the countries of the bloc since that time are required to confirm that they are not draft dodgers.
