Russian athletes set a new world record at the World Cycling Championships in Belgium

On August 19, on the first day of the Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Hesden-Zolder, Belgium, Artem Zybin and Victoria Luchina won two gold medals in the team sprint.

Artyom Zybin teamed with Zakhar Mokeev, Mikhail Demish and Nikita Butenko. The path to the final started with the best result in qualifying and ended with a victory with the best time in the final — 44.367 seconds. The athletes competed with the British team for gold.

Victoria Luchina competed in the team sprint with Veronika Solozobova, Maria Ermolova and Anastasia Pershina. In the final race, the racers competed for gold against the German team, the girls won and set a new world record of 48.759 seconds.

"I am very happy, although the realization that we have set a world record has not yet come. I rode second in the first race, and third in the last two. This position is one of the most difficult for me. You still need to keep up the pace for all three laps and explode at the end to show a good result. That's why I felt even more responsible for winning in the final.

This is my second international competition in my career — both are taking place this summer. We won silver in the team sprint at the European Championships, and now we have won gold and set a world record. Therefore, it was some kind of revenge. The emotions are incredible! But I'm not relaxing, because there are individual disciplines ahead — sprint, backstroke and keirin."

Tomorrow, the riders will compete to reach the semifinals in the individual sprint. The World Championship in Hesden-Zolder, Belgium, takes place from August 19 to 23.
