The Nut Savior has arrived: how the holiday is connected with the Uncreated image of Christ
Orekhovy Spas, which is celebrated on August 29, is the final of the three August Spas. In the church tradition, the holiday is known as the Transference of the Uncreated Image of the Lord Jesus Christ. On this day, believers come to churches, participate in divine services and consecrate nuts and freshly baked bread. In Russia, this day was considered a kind of frontier, after which they began to prepare for the onset of autumn. For more information about the history of the holiday, church traditions, folk signs, as well as what can and cannot be done on August 29, see the Izvestia article.
Orekhovy Spas 2026: the history and spiritual meaning of the holiday
The history of the holiday is connected with the legend of the Miraculous Image. The king of the city of Edessa, Abgar, fell ill with leprosy and, hearing about the miracles of Christ, sent the artist Ananias to him to paint a portrait of the Savior. But because of the crowd gathered to listen to the Son of God, it was impossible to create a picture.
"It's important to say right away: This is not an evangelical story, but an ancient church tradition. According to him, the ruler of Edessa in Syria, Abgar, was seriously ill and, having heard about Christ, sent his man Ananias to him. He was supposed to convey a request for healing and paint an image of the Savior. But he failed to paint the face of Christ. Then the Lord washed his face, wiped it with a handkerchief, and his face miraculously remained on the cloth. This image was delivered to Abgar," Priest Sergiy Kubyshkin, rector of the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica in the Baltic Pearl, told Izvestia.
The king, having applied himself to the payment, was healed, and subsequently, together with his subjects, converted to Christianity. For a long time, the shrine was kept in Edessa, and in 944 it was solemnly transferred to Constantinople by order of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus — it was this event that formed the basis of the holiday.
The man-made image is considered to be the first icon in history. He became a symbol of spiritual strength and grace, and later became a key argument in defense of icon worship. The holiday reminds of faith, which can work miracles, and that even in the most difficult circumstances, a person can turn to God for help.
"The uncreated image is called the first icon primarily in the sense of church tradition: it is not created by an artist — Christ himself leaves his image. And there is a very important thought in this. God has become a man, he has a human face that can be seen and depicted. Christianity is not talking about some faceless "higher power." God entered human history quite concretely, and this is where the Christian understanding of the icon begins," the priest explained.
Why is the Walnut Savior associated with the Miraculous Image of the Savior
The church holiday is dedicated to the memory of the transfer of the Uncreated Image of Jesus Christ from Edessa to Constantinople. The popular name "Nut Savior" appeared because nuts ripen by August 29, and according to tradition, the first harvest is consecrated in the church.
The holiday has other folk names. "Saved on canvas" (or Canvas Savior) refers to the ubrus, a canvas on which the face of Christ was miraculously imprinted. Another name is Bread Savior: by this time the harvest was over, and the first bread was baked from the grain of the new harvest, which was also brought to the temple for consecration.
This is how the church's memory of the historical event and the folk traditions of thanksgiving for the harvest intertwined in the Walnut Savior.
Church traditions of the Walnut Savior
On the day of the feast, a solemn liturgy is celebrated in churches, and special chants are sung in honor of the Uncreated Image of the Savior. Believers come to the service to pray and honor the shrine associated with the legend of the healing of King Abgar.
After the service, according to tradition, the fruits of the new harvest are consecrated — nuts, bread, ears of wheat, grain. The consecrated products are taken home and used in the festive meal.: This is how believers express gratitude to God for the harvest and ask for blessings for further work.
"According to folk and pious tradition, nuts, bread, grain, and other fruits of the new harvest are brought on this day. The meaning here is very simple and good — to thank God that the earth has borne fruit and human labor has not been in vain. But there is no mandatory "set of Walnut Savior" in the church. It was not possible to find nuts — the holiday is not canceled. A bag of hazelnuts bought at the supermarket is also, of course, not a pass to worship. The consecration of fruits is a beautiful tradition of thanksgiving, and not the main content of the day," explained Sergey Kubyshkin.
On this day, special attention is paid to the significance of the first Christian icon: the veneration of the Uncreated image emphasizes the importance of the iconographic tradition in Orthodoxy.
"We remember that in Christ, God became so close to man that you could look at him, you could talk to him, you could touch him. Therefore, an icon for a Christian is not a photograph of a saint, and certainly not a religious talisman. She always points to the person depicted on it. When we venerate the image of Christ, our veneration is directed towards Christ himself. And the name "Nutty Savior" here, of course, throws a modern person off course a little. You can decide that the whole holiday is somehow dedicated to the harvest of nuts. Nuts are a good thing, no doubt, but they are not the theological center of this day. The Church celebrates the Savior, the Savior, and his image made with Hands," the priest emphasized.
For those who cannot attend the divine service, Sergiy Kubyshkin advised them to read the troparion to the Uncreated image in the morning or evening, or simply to pray to Christ in their own words. He also recommended opening the Gospel and staying at least a few minutes without a phone and the usual information noise.
"It seems like a small thing, but sometimes it is these ten minutes of silence that turn out to be the most difficult part of the day," said Sergey Kubyshkin.
The priest added that if there is an opportunity to enter the temple for a short time, it is good, but the lack of such an opportunity does not prevent a person from remembering God during the working day. According to him, the Christian life is not limited to the time spent at the service, and ideally continues after a person leaves the temple.
What can and cannot be done on Orekhovy Spas
What can I do?:
- bake bread and prepare treats, such as pies with nuts, mushrooms, apples or berries.;
- to make preparations for the winter: to dry nuts, to prepare nut tincture;
- Helping those in need: sharing consecrated foods with the poor or treating neighbors;
- on this day, after the end of the Dormition fast, you can perform a church wedding.
What is best to avoid:
- quarrels, foul language and malicious wishes — it is important to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.;
- overeating and alcohol abuse — even after completing the fast, gluttony and excessive alcohol consumption are considered a sin;
- Neglecting prayer is important to devote time to gratitude and turning to God.
"There are no special prohibitions specifically on Nutty Spas. The Dormition Fast had already ended by this time. If the holiday falls on a Wednesday or Friday, the usual rules of a fast day apply; the holiday itself does not establish an additional fast. In 2026, August 29 falls on a Saturday. And all the numerous tips from the series "you can't clean up", "you can't do laundry", "you can't work" — this is already the area of popular beliefs, not church regulations. In general, the church is quite calm about everyday life. If a person needs to go to work on August 29, feed his family, or wash his floor, there is no sin in this. Otherwise, Vera would quickly turn into a complex system of household safety equipment," said Sergey Kubyshkin.
