Gastroenterologist explained the effect of apples on cholesterol levels
Regular consumption of apples can contribute to a moderate reduction in the level of "bad" cholesterol, but these fruits are not able to replace drug therapy. Evgeny Belousov, a gastroenterologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), Candidate of Medical Sciences, told Izvestia about this on August 19, at Yablochny Spas.
"The positive effect of apples is primarily due to the soluble fiber they contain, in particular pectin. In the intestine, it binds part of the bile acids, for the production of which the body needs cholesterol. As a result, the liver begins to spend it more actively on the formation of new bile acids, which can contribute to a moderate decrease in the level of low—density lipoproteins," the specialist noted.
In addition, apples contain polyphenols, natural antioxidants that help reduce lipid oxidation and maintain healthy vascular walls. At the same time, there is currently no convincing evidence of the special benefits of any particular variety for lowering cholesterol. Fruits with red or dark red skins may contain slightly more polyphenols, and sour and dense varieties often have a higher fiber content than very sweet ones.
Belousov stressed that it is not the variety of apples that is much more important, but the regularity of their consumption. If possible, fruits should be eaten together with the peel, which contains a significant portion of dietary fiber and antioxidants. Before that, the apples must be thoroughly washed.
The expert called fresh fruits the most useful for controlling cholesterol levels, since they retain the maximum amount of fiber, vitamins and biologically active substances. Baked apples can also be included in the diet: pectin practically does not break down during heat treatment. This option is particularly suitable for people with sensitive stomachs or diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
At the same time, apple juice is significantly inferior to whole fruits, even if sugar is not added to it. During its preparation, most of the fiber is removed, which plays a key role in lowering cholesterol levels. Jams, jams and sweet desserts made from apples should also not be considered as a healthy alternative due to the high content of added sugar.
For most healthy adults, eating one or two medium-sized apples per day as part of a varied diet is considered optimal. With diabetes, it is necessary to take into account the total amount of carbohydrates, and with irritable bowel syndrome or fructose intolerance, a large amount of fruit can lead to bloating and discomfort. In the late stages of chronic kidney disease, restrictions may be related to the potassium content, so the diet should be coordinated with a doctor.
With diagnosed hypercholesterolemia, especially hereditary, as well as high cardiovascular risk, apples alone are not enough to normalize blood parameters. They can only be part of a comprehensive approach that includes nutrition, physical activity, weight control, and, if necessary, drug therapy.
A more pronounced effect can be achieved by combining apples with other foods containing soluble fiber, including oatmeal, legumes, and whole grains. The diet may also include nuts, flax seeds, vegetables, berries, and fatty marine fish.
Vladislav Beregovoy, a priest and head of the missionary department of the Pesochenskaya diocese, told Izvestia on July 22 what every believer should do for the August Saviours. According to him, the main thing on this day is to prepare for the great sacrament and receive communion, sharing the event with Christ through communion.
