Almost 600 people have been evacuated due to a forest fire on the Greek island of Salamis. This was announced on August 16 by the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT).

"The number of citizens rescued from the Saterli and Kolones marine areas on Salamis Island currently stands at 593. Two fires raging on the island have already led to two deaths," the article says.

It is specified that 10 people were injured as a result of the fire.

According to ERT, the rescued were taken off the island on four passenger ferries. Evacuation continues, and coast guard forces in the affected coastal areas remain on high alert.

Correspondent Jason Natanasiades told Izvestia on August 1 that Greece was engulfed by fires amid extreme heat in Europe. A large number of fires broke out on islands in the Aegean Sea, as well as in resort areas, from where tourists and locals were evacuated.
