School textbooks on geography, which were released 20 years ago, were compiled by the authors in order to criticize the Russian Federation for allegedly "squandering" its natural resources. This was announced on August 14 by the President of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) and Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, Sergei Shoigu.

He stressed that modern textbooks, released in a new edition, should show the whole world that this statement is not true.

"In the end, we need to show the whole world and ourselves that this is far from the case. This is probably what this textbook should be dedicated to," RIA Novosti quoted Shoigu as saying.

On August 8, Russian Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov announced that Russian schoolchildren will begin studying according to the updated curriculum from September 1, changes in which are aimed at forming a unified educational space in the country. The Agency has updated the content of academic subjects and extracurricular activities.

On August 9, the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation approved an updated federal list of textbooks for primary, basic and secondary general education. The list includes, in particular, publications on the history of the regions reunited with Russia, as well as the textbook "Social Studies: basic level" for colleges and technical schools.
