The launch of the Siberian Ring Photon Source (SKIF) megascience facility is vital for Rosatom's defense and civilian programs. This was announced on August 11 by the head of the campaign, Alexei Likhachev, at a meeting of the Council for Science and Education, which is being held in Novosibirsk under the chairmanship of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"We were together during the design, during the construction, and most importantly, we will be together during the operation and development of SKIF. This is vital for both civilian nuclear science and our defense programs," he said.
In addition, Likhachev added that Rosatom has been engaged in mathematical calculations since the early 90s after the cessation of nuclear testing, having created a school of mathematical modeling and a network of supercomputers. The state corporation is ready to apply these developments in the civilian industry.
He specified that the state corporation intends to participate in the creation of a federal scientific and technological program for the development of high-performance computing, AI and supercomputer infrastructure.
SKIF is a charged particle accelerator, similar in principle to colliders. The installation accelerates charged particles to speeds close to light along an annular trajectory, after which super-powerful radiation is generated. What distinguishes SKIF from colliders is that in them particles collide with each other in the opposite direction.
On June 9, Putin discussed with Valery Falkov, head of the Ministry of Education and Science, the work on the SKIF scientific installation. Falkov specified that 34 buildings and structures with a total area of 87 thousand square meters were built within the framework of the project, including seven research stations where all experiments will take place. He also stressed that in the future their number can be increased to 30.
