The biologist spoke about the ways cockroaches spread in Russia
An American cockroach could enter Russia along with cargo through port areas, transport hubs and warehouses with imported goods. Biologist Dmitry Safonov told Izvestia about this on August 9.
"This is a fairly large species, up to about 5 cm. Unlike the usual red cockroach, this species is capable of a short flight, that is, it cannot migrate to the territory of Russia on its own, of course. Obviously, it is an imported species. The main route of entry is through various transport hubs, port areas, warehouses with imported goods that enter our country," he said.
The biologist noted that American cockroaches find the best conditions in dachas. The insect can live in heated basements, greenhouses and wet cellars. Safonov added that cockroaches take root well in closed houses because they are not disturbed there.
According to the expert, American cockroaches, as well as red ones, are mechanical carriers. They move through sewers, basements, and garbage, which is why they transport intestinal infections and other bacteria, including salmonellosis, on their bodies and paws.
In addition, chitinous integument and cockroach excrement are strong allergens and can cause allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma, especially in young children, the expert noted.
Safonov said that it is quite difficult to prevent the spread of insects from neighbors. He stressed that the main measure in the fight against cockroaches is limited access to water and food. After that, it is necessary to block all insect entry routes, sealing cracks in the floor and walls is absolutely necessary. The biologist advised installing a special fine-mesh mesh for ventilation and storing food waste in closed containers.
The expert said that the American cockroach is more difficult to remove. This is due to its large size, strong endurance, and preference for hiding in hard-to-reach places. Usually, in private homes, one treatment is not enough. The biologist called the use of boric acid, which is highly toxic to cockroaches, the most effective approach. In addition, he stressed that aerosols have only a temporary effect and in case of large-scale infection, professional treatment in several stages is required.
Alexander Chikin, Director of Sustainable Development and Digitalization at Save the Forest eco-service, said on May 15 that it was a systematic approach to maintaining order in the house and in the countryside, rather than a one-time cleaning, that would get rid of ants in the room. He added that it is necessary to carefully clean the room, store food in airtight containers, take out the trash in a timely manner and do not leave sweet or greasy pieces on the surfaces.
