Medvedev noted the correctness of Russia's defense of South Ossetia in 2008

Protecting Russia's interests without regard for the "world community" is the right choice, as the events in South Ossetia in 2008 proved. This was announced on August 8 by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.

"18 years have passed since the tragic events of August 2008. They are still proof that protecting our citizens and our national interests, regardless of the opinion of the so—called "international community," is the right choice," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Medvedev stressed that Russia does not care about the opinion of the collective West, because its own national interests are more important for the country. He also stressed that the reaction of the West was a test of Russia's strength.

He stressed that the damage from this will be felt for a long time. On the same day, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the Russian Federation was counting on the early start of practical work on the elaboration and signing of an agreement on the non-use of force between Tbilisi, Sukhum and Tskhinvali. The ministry recalled that in August 2008, Russia conducted an operation to "force Georgia to peace." Subsequently, Moscow recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states and, as noted in the statement, continued to provide them with assistance in matters of security and socio-economic development.
