MGIMO Rector proposed quotas for Olympiad students when applying to universities
When applying to universities for a budget form of study, it would be wise to introduce a quota for the number of incoming Olympiads in order not to deny admission to graduates with maximum scores of the Unified State Exam (USE). This was announced on August 6 by MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov.
He noted that the winners of the Olympiads today occupy almost all budget places in universities. It turns out that when guys come with almost a maximum of more than 300 points, they cannot become students of the budget department.
"This year, guys with 304 points came to us. We find ourselves in a rather difficult situation when talented graduates <...> cannot get to the budget. This makes us think about how to still <...> quota the number of applicants in this line, so as not to deny admission to children who take the exam for 300 points," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
The rector added that this situation leads to a sharp increase in the competition for paid places, the number of which is limited this year.
Dmitry Livanov, rector of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), announced on August 6 that Ekaterina Malkova, a Moscow schoolgirl who became the first person in history to score 500 points on the Unified State Exam, was enrolled at his university. He explained that 346 applicants were admitted to the university with a score of 100 points, 145 applicants scored 200 points, 23 people scored 300 points.
On the same day, the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education announced that as part of the 2026 admission campaign, more than half of 11th grade graduates will be able to enroll in public-funded universities. This year, 620,481 places have been allocated to Russian universities, of which 446,692 are intended for basic higher education, bachelor's degree and specialty programs.
