Finland assessed the impact of the change of power in Hungary on assistance to Ukraine

The change of the Hungarian head of government did not help Ukraine to become closer to membership in the European Union (EU). This opinion was expressed on August 5 by Katalin Miklosshi, a professor at the University of Helsinki.

The expert stated that the new Prime Minister Peter Magyar uses the Ukrainian issue to strengthen his own political positions. In particular, he demands that Kiev ensure the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Transcarpathia.

"Magyar would never have won the election without the votes of conservative-minded and nationalist Hungarians. The fate of Hungarians living outside Hungary is important to them, and the Magyar does not want them to be disappointed," Miklos said in an interview with Yle television and radio company.

She added that many other member states also do not support Ukraine's accelerated accession to the EU, but they do not publicly express their position.

On July 29, the Financial Times newspaper, citing informed sources, noted that Hungarian representatives had blocked the start of negotiations on two new points for Ukraine's further integration into the EU. It was noted that Budapest postponed the opening of the second and third paragraphs of the six. They relate to the issues of joining the single European market and expanding Ukraine's economic and social policy.
