- The Central Bank reported on the prevention of theft of customer funds by 1.9 trillion rubles.
In the second quarter of this year, Russian banks prevented 17.5 million attempts to steal customer funds totaling almost 1.9 trillion rubles. This was announced on August 4 by the press service of the Central Bank of Russia.
"Compared to the first quarter, the growth in both the number and volume of prevented fraudulent transactions exceeded 4%," the regulator's report says.
The amount of losses of bank customers from fraud in the second quarter amounted to 7.35 billion rubles (compared to 7.4 billion in the first quarter). The share of funds that banks reimbursed to victims of fraud increased to 7% (514.6 million rubles).
At the same time, the Central Bank announced the continued high intensity of attacks on legal entities, which is why the share of stolen funds increased to 11.3% from 7.8% a quarter earlier.
Vasily Kutyin, Ingo Bank's Director of analytics, said on July 31 that fraudsters had activated a scheme with "forgotten" bank cards, which they intentionally leave in various public places. Attackers use people's desire to help and trust in others. Having discovered someone else's card, fraudsters can contact the owner of the find under the guise of the owner, a random eyewitness or a representative of the bank, and then offer a supposedly secure verification method.
