Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the situation in the Middle East during telephone talks with Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Foreign Minister of Qatar Mohammed Bin Abdelrahman Al Thani. This was reported on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on August 4.

It is noted that the focus of the discussion was on the escalation of tension in the Persian Gulf region.

"Both sides stressed the importance of an immediate cessation of hostilities and the early resumption of the negotiation process based on the Islamabad Memorandum signed on June 17," the statement said.

The ministers also discussed in detail all key areas for the development of the entire range of friendly Russian-Qatari relations. The heads of departments confirmed their intentions to maintain a regular and trust-based political dialogue, increase trade, economic and investment cooperation, as well as cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian fields.

On July 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Artem Kozhin as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Qatar. Previously, the diplomat headed the Russian mission in the Seychelles. He replaced Dmitry Guadkin, who has represented the interests of the Russian Federation in Qatar since 2021, as head of the diplomatic mission in Doha.
