Sanatorium-resort holidays in Russia are gradually changing their format: instead of recovering from illnesses, people are increasingly choosing preventive programs, check-ups and comprehensive health promotion. Yulia Kuzyaeva, Candidate of Medical Sciences, pulmonologist, allergist and specialist in cognitive behavioral therapy, told Izvestia on August 6.

New priorities for recovery

The modern system of sanatorium-resort care in Russia is undergoing a qualitative transformation. During the Soviet period, prevention was strictly regulated and was perceived as part of a mandatory social package. Today, responsibility for health has shifted to the citizen himself, and the main engines of the system are government regulations, corporate VMI programs and the personal interest of patients.

The portrait of a typical visitor to the sanatorium has changed dramatically: now they are people between the ages of 30 and 50. For them, health is a resource that directly affects their career and quality of life. Being healthy in a modern environment means being successful, which is why active professionals are increasingly choosing wellness vacations instead of passive ones.

Scientific approach and prevention

The main accelerator of interest in prevention was the 2020 pandemic, which forced people to rethink the fragility of the body. The key concept today is the theory of chronic sluggish inflammation as the main driver of age-related changes. Sanatoriums have shifted from rehabilitation after illnesses to early detection of risks and their correction using a system of check-ups.

According to the Candidate of Medical Sciences, the modern model is not a copy of the past, but represents an evolutionary step. The new system combines the achievements of molecular biology and the use of digital gadgets with the best traditions of Russian balneology.

"Instead of elderly people with a bouquet of chronic pathologies, the sanatorium is increasingly visited by young families and active specialists who, in addition to recreation, want to receive objective health data and targeted recommendations to reduce the inflammatory background," said Yulia Kuzyaeva.

Comprehensive impact and new skills

The value of sanatorium rest lies in the systemic effect, which is impossible to obtain in urban clinics. In addition to using natural factors such as mineral waters and therapeutic mud, sanatoriums reset their circadian rhythms, which were disrupted in a megalopolis. The medical staff trains patients in the skills of healthy eating behavior and proper motor regime.

Work with psychosomatics has become an important element of prevention. Specialists conduct healthy thinking training and cognitive work with attitudes, as the psychological state plays a significant role in chronic diseases. The sanatorium actually turns into a school of healthy living, where a person receives targeted recommendations.

The Economics of Longevity

Government policy is increasingly considering prevention as a profitable investment, the doctor added. With an increase in average life expectancy, it is critically important to take care of its quality in order to reduce the burden on the healthcare system. Active longevity programs and socialization of pensioners through cultural and volunteer projects allow them to improve their condition and redistribute resources.

According to Kuzyaeva, the involvement of older people in social activities reduces the need for frequent visits to doctors. This makes it possible to focus medical attention on the medical examination of the able-bodied population and the development of personalized treatment protocols that focus on long-term health preservation.
