- A special national holiday on August 5 is Trofim the Sleeper: history, traditions, omens
Every year on August 5, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the martyrs Trofim, Theophilus and 13 other Christians who did not renounce their faith during the persecution under the Roman Emperor Diocletian. In the national calendar, the date was named "Trofim Insomniac" and "Kalinniki-malinniki". In 2026, the holiday falls on a Wednesday. Read about its history, traditions, strict prohibitions and omens in the Izvestia article.
Trofim Insomnik – 2026: the history of the holiday
The martyrs Trofim, Theophilus and 13 of their co–religionists lived at the turn of the third and fourth centuries, when the Roman Empire was ruled by Diocletian, who went down in history as one of the most brutal persecutors of Christians. During this period, the authorities closed and destroyed temples, destroyed sacred books, forbade believers to gather for worship and required them to publicly participate in pagan sacrifices.
Trofim, Theophilus and their companions were arrested, demanding that they renounce Jesus and sacrifice to idols. But all 15 Christians refused to comply with the order and openly confessed their faith, realizing the punishment that would follow such a decision.
According to the hagiography, in an attempt to break the prisoners' will, the torturers subjected them to the most severe tortures, and then threw them into the fire. However, the flame did not harm the Christians, they came out of it alive and continued to glorify Christ.
After that, the judges realized that they would not be able to force the prisoners to renounce their faith by torture. Trofim, Theophilus, and the rest of the martyrs were sentenced to death. All of them accepted death by not agreeing to participate in the pagan rite.
Traditions of the national holiday celebrated in Russia on August 5th
In Russia, the church date coincided with one of the most intense periods of the agricultural year. By the beginning of August, the peasants were mowing grass, reaping ripe bread, knitting and transporting sheaves, trying to use every dry and clear hour. There was no time to sleep for long periods, so the day was called Trofim Insomnia. "To sleep for a long time is not good," "To reap is not to doze off," "A good host and a small day," they said in the villages.
Raspberries and viburnum were ripening in forests and gardens at that time. This is how the holiday got its second popular name — Kalinniki-malinniki.
Before going out into the field, the peasants went to the temple, where they prayed to Trofim, Theophilus and other martyrs. The saints were asked to strengthen their faith, help them cope with sinful temptations, and alleviate physical and mental ailments. Trofim was also asked to give strength for harvesting and to protect the results of hard work.
Then the men and adult women began field work: reaping bread, mowing, gathering hay, knitting sheaves and transporting crops under the roof. Any delay could result in losses — ripe grain crumbled, and sudden rain spoiled the mown grass.
They worked in the field almost until sunset, but at noon they always took a break, because under direct sunlight a person quickly lost strength and could get sunstroke. The mowers and reapers hid from the sun in the shade, had lunch with food brought from home, drank water or kvass, and returned to work only after the heat had subsided.
The danger of the midday heat was popularly associated with the appearance of special noonday spirits. They were represented by tall girls or women in white clothes going out into the fields when the sun was at its zenith. According to legend, noon could cause a worker to feel dizzy, faint, or wander among the crops for a long time. Therefore, a midday rest was considered a necessary measure.
While the main part of the family was engaged in harvesting, the elderly and children went to pick raspberries and viburnum. Raspberries were eaten fresh, dried, made into jams, jams, compotes, added to pies, and also widely used in folk medicine, primarily in homemade drinks that helped with colds.
Kalina was treated differently. In early August, its fruits still retained a pronounced bitterness, so they were rarely eaten fresh. The berries were dried, steamed, stewed for a long time, and added to jelly, juices, and pie fillings. Infusions and decoctions were also prepared from viburnum, and its bark and flowers were used in folk medicinal formulations.
The ancestors endowed the tree itself with protective properties. Kalina was planted near the house, believing that she protects the family from misfortunes and helps to maintain harmony between loved ones. A twig or a small piece of bark was sometimes kept at the entrance, near the window or in the child's room as a talisman against the evil eye and evil spirits.
In the evening, the housewives sorted the berries they had brought and immediately put them into use. Raspberry and viburnum pies were served on the table, and part of the harvest was harvested for the winter.
In some areas, unmarried girls used pastries in fortune—telling - pies with viburnum and raspberries were mixed and taken at random. The raspberry filling promised sweet and mutual love, and the bitter one with viburnum warned of an unrequited feeling.
What not to do on Trofim Insomniac Day
A number of prohibitions and superstitions were associated with Trofim the Insomniac in Russia, the main of which were considered laziness and long sleep. In the midst of the harvest season, a peasant who overslept in the morning lost his best hours for work and risked not being able to cope with business. According to legend, idleness on Trofimov's day could turn away luck and lead the family to financial difficulties.
What else is forbidden to do on August 5th:
- Going to bed during the day can lead to prolonged insomnia.;
- try jam from the first preparation — after that it will ferment or spoil quickly.;
- breaking and chopping branches of viburnum unnecessarily promises trouble for the family.;
- There is a lot of raw viburnum — its bitterness can attract quarrels and unrequited love.;
- to be greedy and refuse help — avarice can deprive a house of well-being.
Folk signs for August 5th
On Trofim Sleepless, the peasants carefully observed nature, followed the stars, as well as the behavior of birds and insects. According to the signs, it was determined whether the dry weather would continue and whether it would be possible to continue harvesting without a forced break.
- The evening fog is low over the ground, and the next day will be clear and warm.;
- The stars are especially bright before dawn, and it will start raining in two or three days.;
