The stylist named the main trends of school fashion in the new academic year
In the new academic year, school fashion will continue to move away from strict uniforms towards a more free and intellectual style. When the requirements of specific educational institutions are met, clothing becomes a way of self-expression, and layering, preppy aesthetics, and high-quality basic items remain among the main trends. Anna Skorokhodova, stylist, accessories designer and founder of the by SKOROKHODOVA brand, told Izvestia about this on August 3.
According to her, modern school clothes look less and less like a classic uniform. One of the main trends is becoming the preppy style — aesthetics of private schools. Tweed vests, shirts, trousers with arrows, loafers and other elements of the classic style are returning to school wardrobes.
"In Russia, this trend is most often adapted through layering. For example, shirts are combined with thin jumpers, cardigans, jackets and polo shirts. This approach not only looks modern, but also helps students feel comfortable throughout the day by adjusting the amount of clothing depending on the temperature in the classroom and outdoors," the expert explained.
Sports school is becoming another relevant area. If the rules of the school allow, classic shoes can be replaced with minimalistic leather sneakers that go well with both trousers with arrows and strict jackets.
Structural minimalism is also gaining popularity, a style that focuses on the quality of materials, clear silhouettes and a good fit. Thus, wide palazzo trousers are gradually becoming an alternative to traditional pleated skirts, and straight or slightly fitted jackets replace the usual school jackets.
The color palette of the school wardrobe is also changing, Skorokhodova added. Instead of the usual black and dark blue shades, more complex and warm colors are becoming popular. Among them, the stylist highlights a deep chocolate shade and the color Mocha Mousse, which goes well with milky, beige and coffee tones.
"Graphite melange, olive and sage shades are also relevant. Instead of bright white shirts, I recommend choosing creamy white clothes: they look softer, easier to combine with other wardrobe elements and less emphasize the traces of everyday use," the stylist noted.
To create accents in the school image, you can use accessories in burgundy, blue or emerald colors, such as ties, neckerchiefs or other details.
A-line skirts with a length just above the knee, culottes and high-rise palazzo models remain relevant in the women's school wardrobe. Blouses are gradually giving way to laconic bodysuit shirts, which retain their shape better and are comfortable to wear in everyday life. The popularity of excessive oversize is gradually decreasing in men's fashion. It is being replaced by a neater semi-fitted cut: straight trousers with zips, regular fit shirts and jackets with a natural shoulder line.
When preparing for the school year, the stylist advised to rely on universal things that are easy to combine with each other. In her opinion, the basic school wardrobe should include a white or ivory shirt made of thick cotton, a jacket with a clear shoulder line, a knitted vest, trousers of a complex cut with arrows or pinches, and high-quality shoes.
Among the universal shoe models, the expert highlights loafers and leather chelsea. They are suitable for different sets — from classic trousers to skirts and dresses — and at the same time remain practical for daily wear.
Special attention should be paid to materials when choosing school clothes. Skorokhodova recommends choosing blended fabrics that combine the advantages of natural and synthetic fibers: they provide comfort, retain their shape well, and are easier to care for. Cotton fabrics or materials with the addition of viscose are better suited for shirts, since they are closest to the body. And for jackets, trousers and skirts, mixed options with wool, cashmere or elastane are optimal.
The expert named a monophonic bulky jumper made of high-quality yarn, classic trousers made of non-stretchy fabric and one pair of universal leather shoes as the main basic elements of the school wardrobe. These things allow you to create different images and remain relevant throughout the school year.
Maxim Kostenko, an expert at the Ministry of Education and the head of the V.S. Lesnev Institute of Content and Teaching Methods, said on July 29 that from September 1, 2027, updated practice-oriented programs in five academic disciplines for high school students will be introduced in Russian schools. According to the expert, the new programs are aligned with the achievements of modern science and are aimed at strengthening the practical component.
