Belarus announced the right to respond to the closure of checkpoints in Latvia

Belarus may take retaliatory measures against Latvia after the closure of checkpoints on the border of the two countries. This was announced on August 3 by the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Ruslan Varankov.

"In connection with this unfriendly step, the Belarusian country reserves the right to take retaliatory actions against Latvia, including those of an asymmetric nature, to protect the national interests and citizens of the Republic of Belarus," Varankov is quoted as saying on the agency's website.

He noted that Latvia's decision could negatively affect international trade routes, including transit between the European Union and China, as well as the countries of Central Asia.

Varankov also said that the Latvian authorities should check the causes of the incident and establish whether the failure was related to technical problems or political decisions.

On the eve, queues of cars increased at the border of Belarus with the EU states against the background of the suspension of transport by Latvia across the border with the republic. By 20:00 Moscow time, more than 3 thousand people were expected to leave Belarus for the EU.

On July 31, Latvian Interior Minister Janis Dombrava announced that the Latvian-Belarusian border was closed due to technical reasons. Those who have not yet returned to Latvia are advised to use other routes to enter.
