Doctors talked about the prevention of intestinal infections in the summer season
In summer, due to the heat and bathing, the risk of intestinal infections increases. The doctors gave advice on food storage and safety rules by the water. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
The danger of perishable food
At high temperatures, bacteria multiply rapidly in food. Meat, fish, dairy products, eggs and salads with mayonnaise are especially dangerous. Perishable food should not be left without a refrigerator for more than two hours, and if it is hotter than 32 degrees outside — for more than one hour.
To prevent infections, it is important to use different boards and knives for raw and prepared foods. Samira Schashok, a gastroenterologist at the Yekaterininskaya Clinic, stressed that it is impossible to focus only on the appearance of food.
"Dangerous microorganisms may not change the taste, smell or appearance of food. Therefore, it is necessary to focus not on these signs, but on compliance with storage conditions," explained Schashok.
Infections in fountains and reservoirs
Urban fountains pose a serious threat to health, as the water in them circulates in a closed circle and is not disinfected. It gets pathogens from animals, birds and humans. The main risk is associated with ingestion of liquids, which often happens to children while playing.
"The water in the fountains is not regularly disinfected and circulates in a closed system. Pathogens of infections from humans, animals and birds get into street fountains, and the heat promotes the reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms," said infectious disease specialist Natalia Shvedova.
You should swim only in officially authorized places, avoiding sewage pipes and reservoirs with an unpleasant odor. In swimming pools and water parks, the water is cleaned, but the risk of infection remains. If you experience signs of malaise, such as nausea or abdominal pain, you should stop visiting public places for bathing.
Symptoms of the disease and help
Intestinal infection is manifested by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and weakness. The main danger of such conditions is the loss of fluids and salts. To restore balance, doctors recommend using special solutions that should be drunk frequently and in small portions.
Critical symptoms are blood in the stool, a temperature above 38.5 degrees for more than a day, and increasing abdominal pain. Signs of severe dehydration include dry mouth, rare urination, and confusion. In such cases, as well as in case of illness of children or the elderly, it is necessary to seek medical help immediately.
