"Cases of the disease can occur outside the United States," Wallace said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

The scientist stressed that in the context of the international spread of infection, the main concern is about contaminated food, and not transmission between people traveling abroad. Wallace drew attention to information from the US medical authorities that dangerous products were also sold in Mexico.

"The question of whether other countries may be affected depends on the geography of the lettuce supply that caused the outbreak. The investigation in this regard is ongoing," the expert added.

According to him, infection with the parasite does not occur directly from person to person, because after multiplying in the intestine, they need to go through a multi-day stage of development outside the body. In this regard, the scientist came to the conclusion that an infected person cannot transmit the infection through normal interaction.

"Cases abroad associated with this outbreak are likely to be caused by eating the same contaminated products or others exposed to the same source of contamination," Wallace explained.
