At least five people have died and 41 are missing as a result of a fire that broke out on a ferry off the Indonesian island of Madura. This was reported on August 2 by the Reuters news agency, citing the country's search and rescue service.

The ferry was traveling from Surabaya in East Java province to the city of Makassar in south Sulawesi. There were 271 people on board, including passengers and crew members. As a result of search and rescue operations, 225 people were rescued.

The operation to rescue the victims continues, the report says. It is noted that the causes of the fire on board the vessel have yet to be clarified.

The French newspaper 20 Minutes reported on August 1 that a barge that served as a launch pad for fireworks had caught fire during the celebration of Switzerland's National Day in the city of Saint-Preux, located on the shores of Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud. The reasons for the incident are still unclear, but the celebration itself, as noted in the publication, was initially held in conditions of prolonged drought and a very high risk of fires.
