German Foreign Minister urges to protect EU border after influx of migrants in Ceuta

German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl called on Brussels to pay more attention to protecting the EU's external borders after the migrant invasion in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The Bild newspaper writes about this on August 2.

"He (Vadefulh. — ed.) called on the European Commission to give priority attention to the protection of external borders," the article says.

The German foreign minister reportedly held a telephone conversation with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Burita, urging Rabat to calm the situation and help restore control over the border.

"To control illegal migration, we need partners outside Europe, such as Morocco in this case," the newspaper quoted the German minister as saying.

The countries of the union have already started talking about suspending Schengen with Madrid after the invasion of refugees into the Spanish exclave.

The invasion of refugees was recorded on July 30 in Spain, after which the authorities decided to suspend the operation of the only operating border crossing in the city of Melilla in north Africa. More than 60 thousand illegal immigrants were able to reach Spanish Ceuta. Madrid mobilized the military and police, who began using tear gas against the arrivals. As of August 1, 61 migrants died while trying to cross the border.
