The death toll from the earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan, has increased to 38

The number of victims of a strong earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu has increased to 38. This was reported on August 2 by the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri, citing the disaster management headquarters of Kumamoto Prefecture.

"The death toll from the earthquake <...> increased by two, bringing the total death toll to 38 (including two people whose deaths are being investigated for causes related to the disaster)," the publication says.

It is specified that one of the first victims of the disaster was probably a 70-year-old woman who tried to hide in a car. She was hospitalized on July 30 with suspected heat stroke.

"This is the first possible death as a result of this earthquake," the newspaper writes.

It is specified that among the 38 dead there are two people whose deaths are still being investigated for earthquake damage.

The earthquake in Japan occurred on July 28. Initially, aftershocks of magnitude 7.1 began to be felt there, and later, after a short break, they reached magnitude 6.1. At least 138 people were injured in the disaster. As a result of the incident, an explosion occurred in one of the Aeon Mall Kumamoto shopping centers, which was located in the village of Kashima, causing part of the outer wall to collapse. According to preliminary information, the detonation was detected due to a possible gas leak.
