Maximum danger level due to forest fires has been declared in Athens.

The highest fire danger regime has been introduced in Athens due to the risk of fires in the city and forest fires approaching the capital from the northwest. The eKathimerini newspaper writes about this on August 1.

In the city, where the highest level of fire danger has been declared, all municipal services have been put on high alert, police patrols, drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras, and water carriers have been deployed to monitor green areas, the report says.

Athens authorities have also closed access for visitors and vehicles to the Lycabettus and Philopappou hills until further notice due to the extremely high risk of fires.

Correspondent Jason Natanasiades told Izvestia that over 50 fires have been recorded in Greece over the past 24 hours. According to Natanasiades, a large number of fires broke out on islands in the Aegean Sea, as well as in resort areas, from where tourists and locals were evacuated.
