Remote scammers are distributing a fake application on the Internet with the location of gas stations, through which they gain remote access to Russian devices. This is stated in the materials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, which were reviewed by TASS on August 1.

After downloading such an application, malicious software is installed on a mobile device. It allows attackers to remotely control the gadget, gain access to personal data and steal funds.

The Interior Ministry clarified that it is possible to find a fake application through search engines. Users who download it risk giving fraudsters access to information stored on the device.

Due to the spread of the new scheme, the agency called for installing applications only from official online stores and not using unverified download sources.

A study by the Win2Win Communications communication agency and the Brand Analytics social media monitoring and analysis system dated August 1 states that fraudsters are increasingly resorting to fake house chats, the topic of biometric data and deepfakes to deceive Russians. Attackers use the topic of biometrics as an excuse to make calls, convincing people to urgently confirm or "protect" their data.
