Borrell pointed out that Italy's threats to exclude Spain from Schengen were groundless.

The legislation of the European Union (EU) does not provide for the possibility of state exclusion from participation in the Schengen area on the initiative of individual countries. This was announced on July 31 by the former head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel.

"According to EU law, no member state can unilaterally suspend another's participation in the Schengen area," he wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

He added that even despite the breakthrough of thousands of migrants into Spain, Italy's threats to exclude Spain from the Schengen Agreement are groundless and impossible.
