Sunflower: a low crossover with rear-wheel drive has been "registered" in the Russian Federation
The Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad has begun to produce a new hybrid of the Changan brand Deepal, which is still little-known among Russian car enthusiasts. The Izvestia correspondent studied what lies behind the fashionable appearance of the car and what Chinese engineers are trying to surprise.
Pumpkin
The Deepal brand now has perhaps the most atypical model range on the Russian car market. Her debut model was the brutal "square" all-terrain vehicle G318, the image of which evokes thoughts of "defenders" and rally marathons. The second newcomer is as far away from it as possible — this is the urban S07 with a cross-coupe body, which is similar in form factor to the Aito Seres M5 that appeared in Russia two years ago.
The bright exterior of the car was developed in a design studio in Turin under the direction of Bertrand Bach, who worked for Volkswagen and General Motors before Changan. There are a lot of Italian notes in the design, the "muzzle" even resembles a Lamborghini Urus, although the air intake here is very small and is located under the license plate plate. In the dark side "fangs", light panels are hidden under the headlights to display various symbols and signs. The model for the Russian market, however, does not have such functionality.
Sportiness is added to the squat silhouette with chopped panels by 20-inch wheels, visually narrowing the "waist" with black side skirts, a noticeable pseudo diffuser, a sharp upper spoiler on the fifth door and a step under the glass a la "duck tail". The door handles are flip-out, the doors open from the inside at the touch of a button, and the safety rope for physical opening is hidden so that hardly anyone will find it in an emergency. In addition to Russians' favorite dark gray shades, the exterior color scheme includes spectacular pale turquoise and pumpkin.
Sunflower
In terms of minimalism in the interior, the Deepal S07 can compete with Tesla models. There is literally nothing to catch your eye in the cabin, except for the central display. That's probably the calculation. Tired of the many monitors in the new "Chinese"? Here, although it is alone, it is equipped with an interesting and so far unique function for cars in Russia, the feature of which is hinted at, in fact, by the name of the display — Sunflower. The screen rotates on a hinge in a 30-degree range using an electric drive and can be oriented towards both the driver and the passenger. If there is no one at the wheel, the sunflower can automatically turn to the right rider.
You have to access the "sensory plant" regularly, since there are practically no physical keys and switches in the cabin. The content of the multimedia screen is confusing and leads to wandering between different submenus in search of the desired setting. What about voice control? There is such an assistant, but unlike the media system, he does not know Russian.
Adapting driving skills is also necessary for another reason, because there is no dashboard in the car. It is replaced by the so-called intelligent AR—HUD - a color projection on the windshield, where, in addition to the usual data, the level of remaining fuel and battery charge, indicators of the operation of intelligent assistants such as blind spot monitoring, and so on are displayed. With polarized sunglasses, the projection is lost, so you have to monitor the current speed through a window in the corner of the central screen.
Seating in the driver's seat is unusually low by the standards of the class, but it is very comfortable even for long trips. There is wireless charging for one smartphone, two cup holders, and a roomy box on the central tunnel. The traditional-shaped steering wheel with a thick rim has a comfortable grip and is heated, as are all the seats (including the backs). The front seats, in addition to electrical adjustments, are also equipped with ventilation, and the driver's seat is equipped with position memory. The Sony audio system with 14 speakers pleases with the sound.
What about the second row? Space in the legs, a large panoramic roof (1.9 square meters) with a curtain and a touch panel in the center console, with which you can adjust the operation of the climate control unit and move the right front seat. At the same time, the climate control is only dual-zone, and the rear temperature control synchronously changes the settings for the front passenger.
In Russia, the Deepal S07 is devoid not only of customizable emojis in the front bumper, but also of other "chips". In the home market, for example, the crossover has a projection capable of displaying a navigation map in front of the driver's eyes, the front passenger seat has a footrest, and rear riders have access to two entertainment displays built into the front seats and a mini-refrigerator. The driver can install a removable dashboard screen on the steering column and place a panel with physical hot keys under the central display. Russians are not offered such accessories.
Iris
In Russia, the Deepal S07 has a benzoelectric power plant, and in other markets it is also available in a purely electric version. The hybrid sequential 1.5—liter 90-horsepower internal combustion engine works exclusively as a generator for a traction battery with a capacity of almost 32 kWh. It also powers a 238-horsepower electric motor that transmits thrust only to the rear axle. This is the first Chinese rear-wheel drive hybrid in the history of the Russian market.
According to representatives of the brand, with the safety electronics turned off, the S07 can easily be put into a controlled skid on wet asphalt (of course, at a closed landfill). In snowy winter, however, the driver may not have as much fun, especially considering the ground clearance of a regular passenger car is only 165 mm.
According to the manufacturer, the S07 can travel up to 174 km on electric power, and all 992 km in hybrid mode. According to our measurements on the Altai trip along the Chuisky tract, fuel consumption during active pedaling was almost 7 liters per 100 km, so the stated 5.7 liters is quite believable.
The dynamic indicators were also confirmed. I would like to move faster from a low-end model with a claim for sportiness, but the two-ton crossover with two adult men on board could not accelerate to the first hundred faster than eight seconds (also close to the stated 7.7 seconds). A second electric motor would be here...
After all, the zero-seventh is not devoid of drive in handling, even despite the steering wheel being a bit empty in feedback. The suspension is dense, but it is balanced enough, it filters the small things well and does not tire on a long journey. The rolls are minimal, there is no swinging, the behavior in turns at highway speeds is predictable. Habits require active regenerative deceleration to charge the battery when releasing the right pedal — you can turn it off by "rummaging" in the settings, but it makes little sense. As for the sound insulation, the car is quiet enough at speed, partly due to the double front windows.
An expensive bouquet
Localized at the Kaliningrad Avtotor plant, the Deepal S07 is offered in one fixed configuration and costs 5.29 million rubles. With all discounts (government program, credit and trade-in), the price is reduced to 4.08 million rubles. Nevertheless, compared to its closest competitors, the difference is significant.
Changan sees the Geely EX5 EM-i and the front-wheel drive Evolute i-Space as rivals of zero-seven, which, excluding special offers, cost from 3.67 million and 3.59 million rubles, respectively. They are not as fashionable and amazing, but with less powerful 218-horsepower engines, they offer similar acceleration dynamics, and are not particularly inferior in comfort options. On the other hand, the design delights and emotions of rear-wheel drive can be a powerful argument for someone to stand out on the roads.
